Fine Arts Friday: Lunch Bag Stars

Summer Stars

inspired by Carl Sandburg

This week we have been inspired by Carl Sandburg’s “Summer Stars” and the night sky. Like the “long arm man” of the poem, we’ll pick off what we want from the sky bowl, making our very own stars. This is one of our very favorite crafts because it’s just so cool. Bonus, it looks like it must be hard to make, but it really isn’t.

You can make your star at home using the following instructions or join Dorrie at Horn Pond on Saturday 8/22 at 11 am to craft at a social distance. More info about where to meet below. Materials will be provided, but be sure to wear your mask and bring a blanket to sit on!

Materials

  • 7-10 lunch bags

  • glue stick

  • Scissors

  • markers, crayons, paint — whatever speaks to you!

Instructions

  1. Decorate all your paper bags! Color all over the bags, even on the sides that are invisible when your bags are folded.

  2. Cut the open side of the bags into a point. See the picture below.

  3. Attach the bags by gluing a line along the middle seam and along the bottom of the bag. Don’t be shy with the glue stick!

  4. Once you’ve attached all your bags, use the same gluing technique to attach your first and last bags — and voila, you have a star!

  5. Use a hole punch and ribbon to hang your star!

For more instruction, watch this video.

(We recommend cutting the bags before you paste them together — it’s much easier to cut one bag at a time!)

Want to make our stars together/apart? Come find us on Saturday August 22 at 11 am in the field near the Scalley Dam parking lot to craft at a good social distance!

As always, we want to see what you create! Post a picture of your star in the comments here or on Facebook or send it to us at hornpondreview@gmail.com.
